A record-setting goal from the top male goal scorer in Franklin history also netted an Athlete of the Week Award.
Jake Kingsbury, a senior at Franklin, won The Daily Star’s Athlete of the Week Award for the week ending Sept. 19.
Kingsbury left his mark in the school record book when he became the first Franklin boy to score 100 varsity soccer goals, he reached that mark in an amazing four goal, four assist game in an 11-1 Unatego/Franklin win against Afton/Harpursville on Sept. 18. He had three goals and three assists in a win over Walton/Downsville on Sept. 16. Kingsbury also scored on Sept. 14, in a 2-1 win over Marathon.

The nominees for the week ending Saturday, Sept. 26, are:
Shannon Kingsbury, Unatego/Franklin girls soccer: Kingsbury, a Franklin senior, had another big week of scoring goals. She had four goals in a 4-0 win over Sidney on Sept. 24. She also had four goals and three assists in an 11-0 win over Walton/Downsville on Sept. 22.
Carleigh Reed, Charlotte Valley/Schenevus girls soccer: Reed, a Charlotte Valley senior, got the game winner in the Chic Walshe Tournament in Davenport on Sept. 26. Her score midway through the second half gave the host Valor the championship with a 1-0 win over South Kortright/Andes. Reed was named Tournament MVP for her heroics. Reed also scored in a 3-2 overtime win at Sidney on Sept. 22.
Sophie Robinson, Edmeston/Morris girls soccer: Robinson, a senior at Edmeston, had a hat trick in E/M’s 7-0 win at Hunter-Tannersville on Sept. 23.
Aidan Mertz, Laurens/Milford boys soccer: Mertz, a senior at Milford, had a big day at the Laurens homecoming game Sept. 26. He had three goals and two assists as L/M beat Stamford/Jefferson, 9-3. He also had two goals in a 3-2 win over UV/G-MU on Sept. 24. He scored a goal and had an assist in a win over Hunter-Tannersville on Sept. 22.
Tomas Volpini-Romero, Cooperstown boys soccer: The first exchange student nominated for an AOW Award, Volpini-Romero has been stacking up the points for the Hawkeyes. Volpini-Romero, from Mexico, had a goal in Cooperstown’s 3-0 win over Sauquoit Valley for homecoming on Sept. 24. He also had two goals in a 4-2 win over Waterville on Sept. 22.
Brayden Schultz, Richfield Springs/Owen D. Young boys soccer: Schultz, a junior at Richfield Springs, had a big game in a non-league win over Margaretville on Sept. 24. He had three goals and an assist in the 7-0 win over the Blue Devils. Schultz also had two goals and an assist in a 3-0 win over Brookfield on Sept. 22.
Voting begins midnight Saturday, Oct. 3, and run through noon Thursday, Oct. 8. The winner will be announced online Friday, Oct. 9, and in print Saturday, Oct. 10.
