PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State baseball team’s second home game of the season was a struggle on Tuesday.
Middlebury College (18-8) pulled away for a 14-5 non-conference victory over the Cardinals (16-8) at Chip Cummings Field.
Plattsburgh’s three conference starting pitchers were unavailable Tuesday after a successful weekend in Fredonia, and in preparation for this weekend’s big three-game SUNYAC home set against Oneonta.
That left the Cardinals to piece the pitching together for the Middlebury game and also yesterday’s non-conference doubleheader at St. Lawrence University.
Dylan Bass, who pitched in relief in two of the three games last weekend, gave the Cardinals what he had in going the first four innings.
Bass allowed three hits, two walks, three runs and struck out six. He left the game with the score tied at 3-all going to the fifth.
But it was another tough day for the Plattsburgh bullpen, which allowed 11 runs over the next four innings.
The Cardinals also had a rare off game defensively with five errors being charged, and a few other plays that could have been errors if not mental mistakes.
Mitchell Schroeder had the big blow for the Panthers, a long three-run home that broke the game open. Schroeder and Nathan Samii each drove in four runs as the Panthers finished with 14 hits.
Plattsburgh did grab an early 3-1 lead in the game with three runs on just one hit in the bottom of the first.
The Cardinals, despite loading the bases twice, weren’t able to score again until getting a run in the seventh and one more in the eighth.
Middlebury, also prepping for a big conference weekend against Amherst, used eight pitchers.
Nick Cergol reached base all four times while going two-for-two for Plattsburgh, Aidan Diltz added two hits and two RBI, and Daniel Novelli chipped in with a hit and two RBI.
The Cardinals used six pitchers, with Christian Diaz taking the loss.
Middlebury avenged an early-season 14-11 home setback to Plattsburgh.
