PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh State pitchers gave the Cardinals an opportunity to win Tuesday’s non-conference game at Middlebury College.
The Plattsburgh hitters, however, couldn’t seize the opportunity.
The Panthers pushed across a run in the bottom of the 10th without getting a hit and edged the Cardinals, 3-2.
Kyle Cremin’s single drove in Zach Rainville for the Cardinals’ first run of the game in the fifth inning and Colin Ross delivered a single to drive in Aidan Diltz and tie it, at 2-all, in the seventh.
It stayed that way until the bottom of the 10th when a walk, stolen base, intentional walk, walk and fielder’s choice produced the game-winning run.
Nick Goldberg, the third of four Plattsburgh pitchers, took the tough-luck loss. Goldberg, who left after walking the lead-off batter in the 10th, went three innings as he allowed two hits, one run, two walks and struck out four.
But the story for the Cardinals was the inability to get the key hit when needed.
Plattsburgh batters struck out 13 times and stranded 13 runners, including stranding runners in scoring position in five of the innings.
The Cardinals loaded the bases in the sixth with three walks and one out. But the next two hitters struck out.
Then bad luck struck in the ninth when Diltz reached on a one-out error, Ross was hit by a pitch and Alex Kornblau walked to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Austin Caldwell then hit a line drive to first base that was turned into an inning-ending double play.
Five Cardinals had a single in the contest.
Plattsburgh is scheduled to return to the diamond this weekend with a three-game SUNYAC set at Canton on Friday and Saturday.
