Merrimack hoops faces VCU, Princeton
It’s a big four days for the Merrimack College men’s basketball team, fresh off a big win over the defending America East champs, Vermont, on Saturday night, 65-51.
The Warriors were six-point underdogs as point guard Budd Clark did this thing, with 19 points, six assists and six rebounds besting the America East favorites this winter.
Merrimack is playing at Virginia Commonwealth tonight at 7 p.m. in ESPN-plus and then returns home to North Andover for a battle against the top-ranked Ivy League team, Princeton, on Sunday. Princeton is 3-0 with a game agianst Loyola on Friday night.
Martinez injured for regionals
Lawrence resident Anyelina Martinez was hoping to be among the top five national qualifiers in last weekend’s Div. 2 East Regional Cross Country Championships for St. Anselm.
Martinez, a Whittier Tech grad, injured her groin training last week and wasn’t able to compete at the meet in Rochester, N.Y.
Two weeks earlier, she won the Northeast-10 championships over the 6K course.
“It was too bad,” she said, making the trip. “Our trainers thought it was best to sit it out. I really was expecting to do well.”
Martinez will be back on the indoor track team competing in the mile for St. A’s in the winter.
Merrimack hockey defender honored
Merrimack College men’s hockey junior defenseman Zach Bookman was named the Hockey East Defender of the Week for the second time in his career after the Warriors stunning sweep of UConn last weekend.
Zach continued his streak of torching the Huskies, with two assists in Merrimack’s 4-1 win on Friday and scoring his first goal of the season on Saturday in Merrimack’s 5-2 victory.
With those performances, Bookman now has 11 points in six career games against UConn. He also hold the lead for the team in points with five. (1 goal, four assists)
Lemelin signing in Methuen
Former Boston Bruins star goalie Reggie Lemelin will be signing autographs in Methuen on Sun., Dec. 1 at the monthly card show.
The cost is $15 for each autograph for the 1989-90 NHL Jennings Trophy winner from 10 a.m. until noon at the Methuen VFW at 26 River Street.
Show hours are 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. with 40 deal tables of sports cards, POKEMON graded cards and other sports memorabilia.
Admission is $2 with children under 9 free.

Merrimack women host Bucknell
The Merrimack College women’s basketball team, fresh off a 59-49 win over UNH on Monday, will host Patriot League’s Bucknell University at Lawler Arena on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Merrimack, 1-2, is led by sophomore guard Thalia Shepard, of Boston, who is averaging 16.7 points and six assists per game.
