The Delaware County Veterans Services announced several communities in the county will observe Memorial Day this weekend with parades and/or ceremonies to honor the men and women who died defending our country.
The following information was provided to the agency.
• Bloomville/South Kortright/Hobart — On Memorial Day parades will be held in the hamlets of Bloomville and South Kortright and the village of Hobart. Line up for the parade will begin at 9 a.m. in Bloomville starting at the Kortright Town Hall on state Route 10. A service will be held after the parade at the Riverside Cemetery quest speaker Pastor Peg. The parade will start in South Kortright at 10 a.m. at the Community Church. There will be a service with guest speakers Judge Gary Rosa and Pastor Joan Dewing. There will be a Wilson’s chicken barbecue and the South Kortright Church bake sale.Then the parade will start at 11 a.m. in Hobart at the Stamford Town Hall. There will be a service after the parade at the Hobart Memorial Park behind the firehouse.
• Delhi — On Memorial Day, a ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. at the Courthouse Square on Main Street. The parade will begin after the ceremony. A chicken dinner will be served at the Legion in Delhi after the parade.
• Downsville — Downsville’s Memorial Day Parade is scheduled for Monday, May 26. Line up for the parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Downsville Central School parking lot, and it will begin at 10 a.m. The parade will march to Paige Cemetery for a ceremony, then it will line back up after the ceremony and march over to James S. Moore Post 167 American Legion Hall. Immediately upon arrival there will be a dedication of the newest Honor Pavers, float judging, bike judging and refreshments. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will take place in the gymnasium at Downsville Central School.
• Fleishmanns/Margaretville — The event will be put on by the American Legion in Town of Middletown. It will be at 9 a.m. in Fleischmanns and 11 a.m. in Margaretville.
• Franklin — The parade will begin at 11 a.m. May 26, at the school, and go down Main Street, and will end at the Ouleout Valley Cemetery for a ceremony. A chicken barbeque will be held from 11 a.m. until sold out at the American Legion.
• Masonville/Sidney — The American legion and VFW in Sidney march in the following parades Memorial Day: 9 a.m. in Sidney; 10:30 a.m. in Sidney Center 11:30 a.m. and Masonville.
• Stamford — The Stamford parade is set for May 26. Step off will be at 10:30 a.m. from the Catholic church in town.
• Treadwell — 9 a.m. Monday, May 26 lineup for the parade on Church Street, then the parade will commence down county Highway 14 to Croton Cemetery for a service with a guest speaker.
• Walton — Monday, May 26. at 9:30 a.m. general assembly at Walton Central School Bus Garage parking lot, Delaware Street, Walton. At 10 a.m. parade will proceed east on Delaware Street to Veterans Plaza. The Rev. Christine Lindeberg will give opening invocation. Lt. Col. Joseph Cetta will make a brief opening statement, then do a special award presentation. Flag raising will take place, accompanied by the Walton Central School marching band playing the national anthem. Following the ceremony, a luncheon will be served by A.L.A. at the Walton Vets Club, 10 Park Street, Walton. Lunch is free to parade participants. Others are asked to make free will donations. Any proceeds will go to the needs of area veterans. In case of inclement weather, an abbreviated ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. in the gym at Walton Central High School on Stockton Avenue.
According to information from the Andes town clerk, Andes will hold a Memorial Day parade Monday, May 26, at 10:30 a.m. A ceremony will be held in the cemetery at about 11 a.m.
In addition, the Davenport Fire Department will host the Memorial Day parade, ceremony and chicken barbecue Sunday, May 25. According to a Facebook post, the parade will begin at 2 p.m. and march from the entrance of Crazy Acres Campground to the Charlotte Valley Cemetery by the school for a ceremony. The chicken barbecue will begin at 11 a.m. until sold out.
In neighboring Schoharie County, the Jefferson Memorial Day parade will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 23 according to the school’s website.
