The following is a list of Memorial Day events in Greater Newburyport.
NEWBURYPORT
Monday, May 26, at 11 a.m.: Newburyport City Hall.
10:15 a.m. Gather at CVS parking lot, Pond Street, to begin a parade to Newburyport City Hall.
11 a.m. (City Hall) Major Jon-Eric Bourkhardt, Salvation Army, invocation; Pledge of Allegiance led by local Scouts; recitation of recently departed veterans by Mayor Sean Reardon; selected remarks by Veterans’ Services Officer Kevin Hunt; armed forces medley by Newburyport High School Marching Band; proceed to waterfront next to Tuscan Sea Grill and Bar; proceed to Veterans Cemetery for the benediction and taps. In case of rain, the ceremony will be in the City Hall auditorium.
AMESBURY
Monday, May 26, at 10 a.m.
8 a.m. at Alliance Park, where veterans will gather to toss a wreath into the Merrimack River in honor of all fallen Marines and sailors. From there, wreaths will be placed at the veterans plot in Union Cemetery, then to the Doughboy statue and Justin Memorial, and then the Polish Memorial on Market Street.
The main ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. in Landry Stadium. The public is encouraged to attend to show respect for the military men and women who gave their lives serving the country, and the first responders who gave their lives serving their communities. It is recommended that veterans who attend the ceremony wear an item of clothing that distinguishes them as a veteran (cap, shirt, jacket, pins and medals).
In case of rain, the ceremony will be held at Amesbury High School.
SALISBURY
Monday, May 26, at 10 a.m.
The annual Memorial Day parade kicks off at 10 a.m. from the Salisbury fire station parking lot. The parade route will head south on Route 1, continue along Beach Road, turn onto Ferry Road and travel up Pleasant Street, concluding at Salisbury Square.
Whether you would like to march in honor or simply cheer from the sidelines, all are welcome to take part in this meaningful community tradition.
At the parade’s end, join officials on the Salisbury Green for a brief ceremony to honor and remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
MERRIMAC
Monday, May 26, at 8:30 a.m.
Locust Grove Cemetery on Locust Street. Services for each of the armed forces will be offered beginning with the Navy and Coast Guard.
