Northeast Lauderdale High School held a signing ceremony for Trojans baseball player Andrew McCary on Friday. McCary announced his commitment to Pearl River Community College on X, formerly known as Twitter, in November before signing to play baseball at Pearl River on Friday.
McCary said he chose Pearl River because the school has a championship-winning baseball program with top-notch coaches who can help him maximize his abilities. He also mentioned the team’s culture and the school’s athletic facilities as reasons he selected PRCC.
“Coach (Michael) Avalon and his staff are phenomenal people,” Northeast Lauderdale baseball coach Brock McKnight said of the Pearl River coaching staff. “Throughout this process, for any kid, you’re always trying to find the best fit with the best staff, and what those guys do over there is top-notch.”
McCary, a two-year team captain for the Trojans, is a pitcher and outfielder at Northeast. McKnight said he is different than most high school players because McCary works hard, but he is also a baseball nerd who uses analytics and an understanding of how his body works to improve his performance.
“His work ethic is top-notch,” McKnight said. “He’s a kid that leads by example both on and off the field, in the classroom and so on. All of our kids look up to him from middle school to high school, and it’s easy too. He’s a great kid, great personality, does really well in school, so he means a lot to this baseball program.”
McCary is preparing for his senior season with the Trojans, and he is one of eight seniors on this year’s team. He said he would like to win as many games as possible and make a deep run in the playoffs in his final season at Northeast Lauderdale.
“Just the support from the coaches, students, staff, just everybody, it’s like a family here,” McCary said of his time at Northeast Lauderdale. “It makes it really easy to go out there and perform everyday.”
