QUITMAN — Legendary Brooks County High football coach Maurice Freeman has stepped down from his post.
Brooks County Schools confirmed Friday on Facebook that Freeman, winner of two state championships over two stints with the Trojans, had resigned.
“As a dedicated member of our school community, Coach Freeman has contributed significantly to the football program, students and community during his tenure,” said Brooks County Schools on Facebook. “We all wish him the best as we know he will continue to #BringThatHammer in future endeavors.”
Brooks named Josh McFather as interim head coach, “until a permanent replacement is named.”
Freeman spent 21 seasons total at Brooks County with a record of 196-65 and six region titles to go along with the pair of state crowns. In between stints, Freeman coached six years at Brunswick High and four at Southwest of Macon.
Brooks won its first state title with Freeman in 1993, his first season there. Twenty-eight years later, the Trojans shook off a regular season loss to Irwin County to smash the Indians in the Class A public school final, 56-28.
Freeman’s state championships are the only two in football for Brooks County High, which opened in 1959.
Replacing Freeman will be the first head coaching job for McFather, who was a member of the 2021 Brooks state title staff.
