Boards have been removed from the Bewley Building’s windows and the property is now undergoing management changes as well.
Matt Martin told the Union Sun & Journal that he is moving on from his job as property manager for Castello Bewley, LLC, the owner of the Bewley Building.
The leadership change comes nearly three weeks after Charlie Oster of Edgemere Development, a consulting firm hired by PathStone Development, confirmed that PathStone would no longer pursue its plans to renovate the Bewley Building into 100 affordable apartments.
The Common Council rejected PathStone’s rezoning request on Aug. 12, which would have accommodated exterior design modifications to renovate the building into housing.
After internal meetings with Castello Bewley in recent weeks, Martin said the company plans to keep the building open. The Bewley Building is currently near 20% occupancy.
“The decision is to reinvest in the building,” Martin said Sept. 18. “There are some meetings being held over the next week or two to finalize. I’m waiting to see what it will be work-wise and plan-wise. I don’t know if it’s going to be $100,000 or $10,000. I don’t know if it’s going to be to clean up the first floor.”
Martin has several business ventures in the city and town, including ownership of the yet-to-open Shuffle City Brewing Company at 13 W. Main St. and the apartments above; ownership in Willowbrook Golf Course & Restaurant at 4200 Lake Ave.; ownership of the Northwest Bank building at 55 East Ave.; an office building at 80 Washburn St.; and ownership of the former YMCA building at 19 East Ave.
