Would you rather be outside in your garden than anywhere else? Are you Interested in learning more about nature and growing your own fruit and vegetables? Maybe you have been searching for a unique gift for a family member or friend? The University of Illinois Master Gardener program could be the answer.
Master Gardeners are life-long learners who enjoy friendships made with fellow gardeners and making a difference in their community. In 2023, Vermilion County Master Gardeners volunteered over 7,500 hours and donated close to 6,000 pounds of fresh produce to senior citizens and local food pantries.
The Vermilion County Extension Office will once again offer online Master Gardener classes in January 2024. Online students enjoy self-paced training where they can take classes in any order once they have completed the introduction. Training is designed to be viewed on a desktop, laptop, or tablet. A strong internet connection is highly recommended. Topics are separated into modules and include: Plant Diseases; Insects; Annuals and Perennials; Trees, Shrubs; Fruits; Vegetables; Organic Gardening; and more.
Registration is available now until January 8 at go.illinois.edu/ApplyFordIroquoisVermilionMGTraining.
Your $300 class fee includes all materials including a wonderful book written for people gardening in Illinois. Need-based financial assistance is available, but applicants should apply early.
The program offers a mentor system and field trips to help residents learn about local projects and find what appeals to them. Incoming students have two years to complete 40 volunteer hours and become certified Master Gardeners.
