GIRLS TENNIS
Manchester Essex takes two: The Hornets secured a clean 5-0 sweep of Pentucket on Monday afternoon. Aurora Lenehan (6-4, 7-5), Sarah Cort (6-0, 6-0) and Grace Scarbrough (6-0, 6-0) cruised in singles action while the doubles teams of Nina Zalosh/Libby Lawler (6-2, 7-5) and Ella Arntsen/Maeve McCardle (6-2, 6-3) also won in straight sets.
Then on Tuesday, Manchester earned a 4-1 victory over Swampscott to improve to 10-8 on the year. Lenehan (6-3, 6-3), Cort (6-2, 6-4) and Scarbrough (6-4, 6-1) won their singles matches while the first doubles team of Zalosh and Lawler won 7-6, 6-0. The Hornets will conclude their regular season on Wednesday at home against Newburyport (4 p.m. start).
Lynnfield 5, Rockport 0: Mariana DeBenedictis put together a strong effort at second singles before ultimately falling in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 0-1 (10-8) for Rockport. DeBenedictis fell behind 9-3 in the decisive super tiebreaker and rattled off five straight points before just falling short. With the 8th-graders off to Washington D.C., Summer Warren was not in the lineup and finishes the season at 2-2.
Gloucester drops two: The Fishermen (6-11) suffered identical 5-0 losses to Beverly (Monday) and Ipswich (Tuesday) to begin this week. They’ll wrap up the regular season on Wednesday at Saugus at 4 p.m.
BOYS TENNIS
Hornets suffer first loss: After rolling past Pentucket, 5-0, on Monday, the Hornets ran into a buzz saw at Division 1 powerhouse St. John’s Prep on Tuesday afternoon. It was Manchester’s regular season finale and it dropped a 5-0 decision to the talented Eagles. The Hornets (17-1) will still likely garner the top seed in the Division 4 state tournament bracket.
Gloucester drops two: The young Fishermen (6-10) were unable to steal a point off a talented, 15-1 Marblehead squad on Monday afternoon. Then on Tuesday, they fell by the same 5-0 score at Wakefield. Gloucester concludes the regular season on Wednesday at Salem (4 p.m.).
Lynnfield 5, Rockport 0: The young Vikings (0-15) were swept in their season finale on Tuesday afternoon.
BASEBALL
Arlington Catholic 9, Manchester Essex 6: The Hornets (9-10) hung tough with a talented Arlington Catholic team on Monday afternoon. Mikey Harris went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, two runs and an RBI while Connor St. Laurent was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the charge. Nick Glass also had two hits including a double to go with an RBI and a run scored. Pitcher Satchel Rubin came in in relief and did a great job keeping his team in it. Manchester will now await their seed in the looming Division 4 state tournament bracket.
BOYS LACROSSE
Newburyport 11, Manchester Essex 6: The Hornets (13-3) dropped their second straight game following a six-game winning streak despite a hat trick from Jack McCavanagh (assist). Walker Valeo scored once and dished out two assists while Charlie Thurlow and Carson Croft each had one goal and one helper. Turner Valeo added an assist and goalie Aaron Crompton made 10 saves in net. Manchester returns to action on Wednesday evening when it hosts Essex Tech at 6:30 under the lights.
Beverly 13, Gloucester 6: The Fishermen’s strong effort fell just short in Tuesday evening’s NEC battle. Now 4-11, they’ll finish up their season at home against Bishop Fenwick on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Beverly 18, Gloucester 0: The Fishermen (1-14) were unable to keep pace with a talented Beverly squad on Tuesday afternoon at home. They’ll wrap up their season at Bishop Fenwick on Saturday at noon.
SOFTBALL
Essex Tech 23, Rockport 1: The Vikings (0-17) were unable to muster up much offense in Monday’s setback. They’ll close out the season on Wednesday at Amesbury at 4 p.m.
