FIELD HOCKEY
Manchester Essex 3, North Reading 1: On Monday, the Hornets bounced back from a tough loss at Sandwich and improved to 5-1 behind a pair of goals from Laila Mears in the third quarter. Abby Kent also scored, doing so just 45 seconds into action to get her team off to a strong start. In total, Manchester had 25 shots on net and only gave up one corner throughout the game. They’ll be back at it on Thursday when they travel to Masconomet for a 5:15 p.m. start.
Pentucket 1, Rockport 0: Despite the end result, Rockport head coach Faithe Shatford was very pleased with her team’s fight in Monday’s game.
“The kids came out flying. They knew how important the game was for power rankings and they gave it their all,” said Shatford. “We were happy to get a lot of shots off against a strong keeper; kudos to the Pentucket keeper.”
Junior forward Dakota Graham and junior captain and midfielder Gretel Marshall both played well in the loss, as did sophomore defender Liv Flannagan and sophomore forward Charlotte Gardner. Now 3-4, Rockport will aim to get back into the win column when it hosts Amesbury on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Gloucester takes two: On Monday, the Fishermen earned a convincing 4-0 home win over Bishop Fenwick. Less than 24 hours later, they toppled Swampscott, 4-1, boosting their season record to 3-1-1 in the process.
GOLF
Gloucester 36.5, Winthrop 35.5: In a wildly competitive match that came down to the wire on Monday, Gloucester’s Lukas Albano drilled a 20-foot putt in front of a big crowd on the final hole to help seal the team victory just as darkness was setting in. Albano led the Fishermen with a four-point match play win while Will Johnson also pitched in with a huge win. Adam Conigliari was also strong, firing a 38 to earn a tie in his match along with Kam Francis and Ben Scola. Now 7-2 on the season, Gloucester returns to the course on Thursday when it hosts Masconomet for a 3:30 p.m. start.
Rockport 148, North Reading 134: The bottom of the lineup carried Rockport to a rare win at Hillview Golf Course on Tuesday afternoon. Landon Parco led all scorers with 31 points, carding a 3-over par 39. Louis Iacono shot a 2-over 38, aided by a 40-foot birdie putt, tallying 25 points to help the Vikings improve to 6-2. Ben Sperry also played well, dropping in a birdie and finishing with 28 points.
The Vikings are back in action on Thursday in a rivalry matchup against Manchester Essex at Rockport GC (3:30 p.m.).
Manchester Essex 158, Hamilton-Wenham 144: The Hornets improved to 6-1 on the season behind a huge performance from Graham Lewis (32 points). Captain Jack McCavanagh added a solid 23 points while Conor Dickson chipped in with a big 20. Manchester takes on Newburyport at Rowley Country Club on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
GIRLS SOCCER
Swampscott 7, Gloucester 0: The Fishermen held the Big Blue scoreless for 35 minutes before conceding two goals before halftime in the eventual loss. Junior right midfielder Ava Vidal, junior center midfielder Abigail Desmond, and freshman right fullback Jude Friday all turned in strong performances while playing new roles for Gloucester. The Fishermen (now 0-5) will look for their first win of the season when they host a fellow winless squad in Peabody on Wednesday at 4:30.
Pentucket 5, Rockport 0: The Vikings (0-4-1) were unable to muster up any offense against a tough Panthers squad in Tuesday’s loss. They’ll return to the pitch on Thursday to host Amesbury (4 p.m.).
North Reading 5, Manchester Essex 0: The Hornets (2-2-1) were unable to keep pace with a talented and unbeaten North Reading team. Next up is a home matchup with Georgetown on Thursday at 4 p.m.
BOYS SOCCER
Swampscott 4, Gloucester 1: The Fishermen fell to 0-5 with Monday afternoon’s home setback. They’ll look for their first win on Wednesday when they travel to Peabody for an under the lights clash at 6:30.
North Reading 2, Manchester Essex 0: The Hornets (2-3-1) suffered their second straight shutout loss on the road Tuesday afternoon. They’ll be off until Friday when they travel to Georgetown for a 6 p.m. start.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Winthrop 3, Gloucester 0: The Fishermen battled hard in a competitive 25-19, 26-24, 25-11 road defeat on Monday. Sophomore right hitter Meghan Buckley had two kills; junior outside hitter Sara Fernandes had two kills and served a pair of aces; junior outside hitter Jocelyn Maddalena had two kills; and junior setter Kadijah Kaba served up four aces in the loss. Gloucester is back at it on Thursday for a road clash at Salem (5:30 p.m.).
