SALEM — Twenty-six sophomores, including Newburyport’s Jenny Doyle and Rowley’s Emma Joyce, were recently inducted into Salem State University’s Alpha Omega Psi (AOP) honor society.
The university’s Student Success and the First Year Experience Office inducted the students during an Oct. 29 ceremony.
The Emerging Scholars Program is one of many initiatives at Salem State University designed to connect first-year students with support that assists them in achieving success on their journey towards college completion. Inductees received a formal certificate and a medallion to wear as part of their commencement regalia when they graduate.
During their first year, students participated in the Salem State University Emerging Scholars Program and successfully completed all requirements while maintaining a commitment to their academic success. Emerging Scholars participants are paired with graduate student success coaches and participate in a variety of guided sessions and focused programs throughout their first year. The program is designed to build students’ academic and life skills.
“Emerging Scholars provides students an opportunity to take ownership of their college experience while taking advantage of a coach whose sole focus is to motivate and guide them on that journey,” said Mathew Chetnik, assistant dean of Student Success and the First Year Experience. “While college can be hectic, these students completed all required sessions and were able to demonstrate a strong academic record at the end of their first year.”
The ceremony included Emerging Scholars Success Coaches Logan Austin and Nicole Anderson, Emerging Scholars Program Coordinators Jace Rosado and Kaley McLean, as well as Alpha Omega Psi board members Nicole Bassett and Riley Plowman. The keynote addresses were given by Salem State Assistant Vice President Lee Brossoit as well as student speaker and AOP member Nicole Bassett.
“The students in the Emerging Scholars Program were hardworking and dedicated this past year,” said Caroly Tracy, exploratory program coordinator and former Emerging Scholars success coach.
“Even as many worked multiple jobs and supported families, students showed up and engaged. They persevered to meet the requirements and we are so proud of their efforts. I have no doubt that with their drive and academic success, they will do well in all their future endeavors.”
