It didn’t take long for the defending Division 3 state runner-up to look in midseason form.
After a dramatic tie against Pentucket in its season opener, the Newburyport field hockey team took care of business against Lynnfield late last week. And that positive momentum would carry over to Monday’s game, where the Clippers put their foot down against rival Triton, 5-0.
Olivia Wilson led the way offensively with a pair of goals, and also assisted on the game’s first goal scored by Ella Loomes. The Clippers got their final tallies from Ruby Fields and Riley Lombard, and both Olivia Kreuz and Ari DeRosa had assists.
Pentucket FH can’t complete comeback
The Pentucket field hockey team fell to an even 1-1-1 on the young season after falling to North Reading on Monday, 2-1. Cat Colvin tried to will the team back with a late goal in the fourth quarter, but the Panthers couldn’t find an equalizer in the closing seconds.
Newburyport volleyball handles Triton
The Newburyport volleyball team improved to 2-0 on the year after handling a young Triton squad in straight sets, 25-12, 25-9, 25-18. Olivia Foley had another solid game for the Clippers with 2 kills and 5 blocks, and Gretchen Boelke was dialed in with her serves and posted 3 aces.
Returning Daily News All-Star Laura Zahornasky led the Vikings with 9 assists and 3 digs, and Colleen Johnson had 3 kills (in just five attempts) with a block in her first ever varsity game.
Triton golf falls in heartbreaker
In one of the closest golf matches you’ll see in the Cape Ann League, Triton lost a heartbreaker to North Reading on Monday, 144-143. Leading the way for the Vikings (2-4) was Vinny Magee with 30 Stableford points, and Greg Muse with 26.
Trougakos with the clean sheet for Royals
The Georgetown boys soccer team earned its first win of the season on Tuesday, getting a shutout in net from junior Peter Trougakos to blank Amesbury, 3-0. Aidan Beqiraj scored twice for the Royals, and Zachary Pinkham had both a goal and an assist. Meteo Crosby and Bryce Hodges also had assists for the winners.
