The Newburyport softball team needed this kind of win.
Following a pair of tough setbacks, the Clippers rolled into Monday’s game at Hamilton-Wenham in search of some positive momentum. Luckily, that’s exactly what they found, getting a run in the top of the seventh and holding on in the bottom half thanks to Clara Thompson to get the 5-4 win.
Thompson, a sophomore, struck out 13 over seven innings in the circle, and worked around a two-out walk in the seventh with a game-ending pop out. It was a 4-4 game heading into the top half of the inning, but Ryleigh McCarty would start the frame with a single to left field. The sophomore then stole second, and two batters later scored on an RBI-single from Katie Kebler. Both Sophie Lavallee (2 RBI) and Bella Gemme went 2-for-4, and Cassidy Bolcome went 1-for-3 with an RBI and two stolen bases.
Pentucket girls tennis downs Triton, wins second straight
The winning streak for the Pentucket girls tennis team is up to two.
Following a sweep of Winthrop over the weekend, the Panthers kept it rolling on Monday with a 4-1 win over Triton. And it was certainly a strong day for the two doubles teams for the Panthers (2-2), with Sophie Marcus and Sophia Nickerson winning 6-1, 6-1, and Riley Duggan and Paige Nottingham coming away with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Pentucket also got victories from Zoey Cennami at No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-1), and Katie Hella at No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-2). Meanwhile for Triton, Ava Connelly earned the 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles.
Giusto, January both homer, Triton wins big
The Triton softball team made quick work of Rockport on Monday, winning by a stunning 26-0 final score across five innings. Offensively, the Vikings (2-1) were led by home runs from Jillian Giusto and Maddie January, and Izze Turner smacked two doubles.
Then in the circle, Emma Penniman scattered just one walk with 11 Ks.
Fair blasts HR, Georgetown moves to 4-0
The Georgetown softball team keeps rolling.
The Royals opened up a two-run lead after the first inning on Monday, and junior Ava Fair blasted a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to power the team to an 8-2 win over Lynnfield. It was part of a 2-for-3 day at the plate for Fair, and Jenna Johnson (2), Ellie Barbarick, Talya Mariani and Megan Maguire all had RBI-hits.
Then once again, Georgetown (4-0) got a two-hit gem from pitcher Maddie Grant, who struck out 15 batters.
Port boys lacrosse takes first setback
It would have been a tall task to finish the season undefeated.
The Newburyport boys lacrosse team was heading in that direction following four blowout wins to open its season. But facing a strong Division 1 opponent in Concord-Carlisle on Monday afternoon, the Clippers fought hard but took their first loss of the year, 9-8.
Offensively both Carter Scott and Eli Sirota had a hat-trick, Colin Fuller had two goals and Davis Pons had an assist.
Another heartbreaker for Amesbury baseball
The first win for the Amesbury baseball team is proving elusive.
First it was the Redhawks allowing four runs in the bottom of the seventh to lose on a walkoff at Methuen, then over the weekend, they could only muster a single hit in a one-run loss to Manchester Essex. Now on Monday, the Redhawks were again on the wrong end of a walkoff, allowing the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh followed by the game-ending run in the eighth to fall up at Ipswich, 7-6.
Logan Genualdo went 1-for-4 with a double, and Ethan Kirby also went 1-for-4 with a two-run single. Elsewhere for Amesbury (0-4), Thomas McElaney, Connor Scialdone, Josh Roberts and Jacob Noyes had hits.
