This has become the norm for Cullen Kohan.
The Triton senior has nearly posted a few quota point rounds in the mid-30s this year, and just about did it again on Wednesday afternoon. Kohan came home to the Ould Newbury clubhouse with 34 points, leading the Vikings to a solid 175-154 victory over visiting Essex Tech.
But the depth also showed up for the team. Elsewhere for the Vikings (4-1), Jack Gagne carded 30 points, while both Evan Allen and Tedy Magee finished with 29.
Pentucket golf on receiving end of 41-point outburst
At the end of Wednesday’s match, the Pentucket golf team had posted its second-highest score of the season. But unfortunately for the Panthers, the best round the CAL has seen this decade was on the other side.
No joke.
The beautiful Haverhill Country Club has now been the home to 40-point outbursts in back-to-back seasons. On Wednesday, it was Brendan Nelson firing a 2-under round to come home with 41 quota points, leading North Reading to a 189-143 victory over the host Panthers. Current Newburyport senior Jack Oreal has two 40-point rounds over his career, with his most recent one coming last year at Haverhill CC. Then going back to the 2020 season, former Triton and area great Cael Kohan also had a 40-point day.
But those two didn’t get to 41 like Nelson.
That round was obviously the story of the day, but, like has been mentioned, Pentucket (0-5) also had a great outing despite the final score. Colin Price led the Panthers with 27 points, while Aiden Felzani was right behind him with 26 and Brody LeColst carded 25.
Shanahan scores, Amesbury hangs tough with Essex Tech
The Amesbury field hockey defense held strong for as long as it could.
Welcoming a matchup against Essex Tech on Wednesday afternoon, seven stops from Shelby Massey in the cage — along with defensive saves from Addy Cooper and Liv Jusfredo — kept the Redhawks in just a one-goal deficit at halftime. But the dam eventually broke in the fourth quarter, with the visiting Hawks scoring twice to eventually secure the 3-1 win.
Massey ended the afternoon with nine saves, while Hope Shanahan buried her first goal of the year. Then Charlotte Kime was credited for being a standout for the Redhawks (0-3), who will travel for a non-league matchup at Everett on Friday.
Best round yet for Georgetown golf
The Georgetown/Whittier Tech co-op golf team just continues to improve.
And on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon, the result was the Royals posting their best score of the year while at their home Black Swan Country Club. But a strong visiting Lynnfield team was also swinging it well, and was able to drive home following a 184-134 victory.
In the setback, Georgetown (0-6) was led by junior Nate Anderton with 28 quota points. Consistent senior Robbie Skahan contributed 24 points, Gavin O’Brien posted a season-high 23 points, and Jeremy Neilson added a very respectable 21 points.
“I honestly couldn’t be more proud of our golfers,” said Georgetown coach Michael Murphy. “The combination of navigating a challenging Myopia Hunt Club (on Tuesday), along with facing a high-level Lynnfield lineup, brought out the best in the team. Even in defeat, our roster makes adjustments, proves to be coachable, and loves getting out on the course.”
