There had to be a quick regroup.
Heading into the third period of Monday night’s game, the Newburyport boys hockey team looked to be in good shape leading by two goals. But as the clock at the Henry Graf Rink hit triple zeros, the Clippers found themselves having to play an overtime period after visiting Masconomet tied the game with four minutes left.
Thankfully, the Clippers weren’t fazed.
Sophomore forward Jack Sullivan completed his big night by scoring the game-winner with a minute left in the extra frame, finishing a rebound off a Luke MacIsaac shot to lift Newburyport to the 3-2 victory over Masconomet. It was the second goal of the night for Sullivan, who also assisted on the team’s final tally that was scored by MacIsaac in the second period.
Axel Becker also had an assist for the Clippers (5-4-1) — who outshot the Chieftians 34-19 — and sophomore goalie Sean Murray got the win in net. The Clippers will next travel to play Essex Tech on Saturday afternoon with puck drop scheduled for 12:10 p.m.
Amesbury hockey falls to top-10 team
The result wasn’t there, but it was still good competition for Amesbury to get.
On Monday night, the Redhawks made the trip down for a non-league game against Nashoba Regional, and put up a good fight in what ended up being a 5-3 loss. But it’s certainly not a bad setback for the Redhawks (6-4-0), as Nashoba Regional (6-1-1) is currently ranked No. 10 in Division 3.
Scoring the goals for Amesbury were Owen Bartniski, Evan Murphy and Lincoln Kime, and picking up assists were Wes Ackerman (2), Kime and Tommy Puorro. The Redhawks will look to get back into the win column when they travel to Pentucket on Saturday night (7 p.m.).
Zaneski wins title for Pentucket wrestling at Pelham Invite
The grit he played with on the gridirion has certainly transitioned over to the wrestling mat for Cooper Zaneski.
Over the weekend, the Pentucket junior went undefeated to win the 175-pound championship at the popular Pelham Invitational. And even better, Zaneski’s big day helped the Panthers place third overall out of the 16 teams in attendance.
Then elsewhere for Pentucket, Damien Houle earned the bronze medal at 120, and placing fourth were Jesse Percival (106), Felipe Placa (132), Jackson Miller (165), Louis Martiniello (175) and Will Lewis (215).
