The Georgetown girls basketball team just hasn’t stopped working.
Because unfortunately for the Royals, the season has been upended multiple times by various different injuries and illnesses. So much so that first-year coach Angel DeLeon has only had his full roster available to him once this winter, and a few close losses could have gone the other way had the team been at full strength.
But they’ve just kept trucking forward.
And on Wednesday night, Georgetown made it two wins over its last three games following a blowout victory down at Lynn English, 62-29. The Royals (3-6) saw four different athletes finish in double figures, led by Victoria Barbarick with 18 points, Brylee Hodges with 17 points, and both Channel Vizcaino and Crismeylin Mateo with 11 points.
Which has been the case most of the season for those two at the top.
Still both just 8th-graders, Barbarick (17.8 ppg, 15 3s) and Hodges (13.0 ppg, 9 3s) are the team’s two leading scorers, and two of the top-3 scorers in our area. The Royals are also hopeful to get senior captain Katie Davies back from injury soon, but will first try to make it two in a row when they travel up to Triton on Monday night.
Epic win for Triton wrestling
Needless to say, the Triton wrestling team needed this one.
Solid efforts weren’t necessarily showing up in the win column for the Vikings so far this season, but that all changed on Wednesday night following a dramatic 42-40 victory over Essex Tech/Masconomet. Trailing heading into the final three matches, the Vikings (3-8-1) were able to get two pins and a decision loss to pull out the intense match.
It started with returning captain Jordan Ortiz getting a big pin at 165 (1:35), then 8th-grader Colton Barlow came storming back after trailing 10-1 to get a huge third-period pin at 175 (4:18). It all came down to the 190-pound bout, and junior James D’Amato was able to fight off his back and not get pinned to help the Vikings hold on. Had he got pinned, Essex Tech/Masco would have won the match by a point.
“This was the best effort of the season,” said Triton coach Shawn McElligott.
Also winning by pin for Triton was Mike Haidaczuk at 285 (1:33), Riley-Anne Tarmey at 106 (3:33), Austin Scolamiero at 138 (:50), Ben Imlach at 144 (2:51) and Foster Campbell at 150 (3:13). Up next, the Vikings will travel to Tyngsboro on Saturday morning for a quad-meet.
Amesbury girls hoop drops non-league game
All told, it was still a great first half of the season for the Amesbury girls basketball team.
Even after a 54-44 non-league loss to a good Beverly team on Wednesday, the Redhawks (9-2) are still just one win away from matching their season total from last winter — with still half of the year to go. Olivia McKay was out in front with 13 points, both Delaney Sargent and Haley Dube had 8 points, and Maddy Rodrigues chipped in 7 points.
Amesbury will next host Muniz Academy on Saturday at noon.
Pentucket hockey shut out
It was a rough night on Wednesday for Chase Pelletier, Mac Cole and the Pentucket hockey team, which went on the road and couldn’t find the back of the net in a 4-0 loss to Lynnfield. And it won’t get much easier for the Panthers (4-5-1), who will next host a talented Amesbury squad on Saturday with a 7 p.m. scheduled puck drop.
Near breakthrough for Triton hockey
It was a good effort from Cullen Kohan, Jace Hersey, Josh Monteiro and the Triton hockey team on Wednesday night, but host Bishop Fenwick was able to squeak out a 1-0 win. Up next for the young Vikings (0-10-0), they’ll host Lynnfield on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
