A year ago, it became the main quest for the Amesbury golf program.
Make the Division 3 North Sectional meet as a full team.
Now, there still ended up being history made, as teammates Jack Kusler and Gus Headrick became the program’s first golfers in a decade to qualify for the Division 3 State Meet as individuals. But when the dust had settled on the regular season, the Redhawks were just one win shy of accomplishing that goal for the entire group.
But this year … that goal’s been taken care of by October.
Amesbury made sure of that on Tuesday afternoon, beating rival Pentucket, 165-123, to earn its seventh victory of the year. And with it, the Redhawks (7-2) can now only finish with a .500 record or better, which automatically qualifies them for the Sectional meet as an entire unit. Kusler (33 quota points) and Headrick (31) were out in front for the winners, while Nick Creps added 28 points and Will Ouellet came home with 27.
Meanwhile for Pentucket (0-9), out in front was Logan Artus with 24 points while Owen Case carded 22 from the No. 8 spot in the order.
Depth shows up again for Newburyport golf
To be honest, Tuesday afternoon was just another ho-hum day in the office for the Newburyport golf team.
Which is an absolutely wild thing to say considering the final score.
But the beat just rolled on for the Clippers, who went on the road and put up another “normal” score — for them — by beating Manchester Essex, 186-121. It’s the second time this season that the undefeated Clippers (8-0) have put up 186 quota points, which is just one below their season-high of 187 dropped against Essex Tech.
And a pair of familiar faces were leading the way for the winners, with Gavin Goich coming home with 35 points while Jack Oreal was right behind at 34. Then both Sam Luekens and Tom Gagnon carded 30 points, and were followed by Jackson LaCava with 29 and Tucker Cowles with 28.
Two in a row for Pentucket volleyball
This was an important one to not let slip away.
We’ve talked about the tough schedule that the Pentucket volleyball team faced to open the season, which still had it ranked at No. 29 in the initial MIAA Division 3 power poll despite having a less-than-stellar record. The Panthers picked up their first win of the season against Triton a week ago, and couldn’t afford to let their guard down against a rebuilding Georgetown program on Tuesday evening.
Well, safe to say they didn’t.
Senior captains Valerie Ridgley, Emma Burkinshaw, Michaela Gabardi, Ellie DeRosa, Devyn Walsh, Genevieve D’Angelo and Pentucket took care of business at home, sweeping Georgetown, 3-0. It was the second victory in a row for the Panthers (2-4), who have a busy week with Ipswich on Wednesday and Essex Tech on Thursday.
Meanwhile for Georgetown (0-8), this year is all about building a foundation. The Royals have no seniors and only three juniors on the roster, and of the 12 athletes on the team, eight of them are freshmen or younger.
