A pair of Amesbury football seniors and teammates will be playing the sport at the next level.
Christian McGarry announced that he will continue his career at Plymouth State. The imposing defensive tackle was known more for stuffing the opposing team’s run game and wreaking havoc in the backfield, but he also stepped in as a running back this fall and picked up 370 yards on 59 carries with 5 TDs. He also was a CAL All-Star basketball player this winter who averaged 8.2 points per game.
But back to football, it wasn’t too long after that Amesbury teammate Nico Cox announced his committment to Bridgewater State. A bruising back, Cox rushed for 135 yards on only 29 carries this fall, but was used more on the goal line and picked up four 2-point conversions. and he was better as an outside linebacker, finishing as a team leader in tackles.
Port’s Habib, Conway commit as well
Newburyport also had a pair of talented female athletes recently make college commitments as well.
Grace Habib is currently gearing up for her senior softball season, but after graduation she’ll get ready to attend Curry College where she’ll continue the sport. A four-year starting catcher and two-year captain, Habib hit .474 (37-for-78) last year with 25 RBI and a home run. She was named a CAL All-Star last spring, will be a major player to watch this upcoming season, and will be studying Communications when she gets to Curry.
Similarly, classmate Katie Conway will continue her field hockey career at Ohio Wesleyan University, where she will major in Pre-Professional Zoology. A four-year starting defender, two-year captain and two-time Daily News All-Star, Conway has left behind quite the field hockey legacy at Newburyport, and this fall helped the Clippers make a run to the Division 3 State Championship game.
