Sometimes, a change of scenary is all an athlete needs.
Local baseball fans should certainly remember the name Jake Harring. The electric infielder was a two-time Daily News All-Star during his time at Amesbury High, who then transferred and spent his last two years of high school at Austin Prep — being named Team MVP as a senior in 2024 after hitting .492 with 23 stolen bases and 14 RBI. Last spring, though, he saw limited playing time as a freshman at Division I Hofstra University, and wound up hitting .167 (9-for-54) with a home run and five RBI in just 15 games.
But, as it turned out, a fresh start was all that was needed.
Harring transferred to Salve Regina, and his All-Star form returned to the surface. Besides helping the Seahawks (40-8) advance to the NCAA Division III Super Regional — where the team unfortunately lost to Endicott College for the second year in a row with a spot in the World Series at stake — Harring was named a First Team All-NEWMAC All-Star. The sophomore — who now lists Portsmouth, N.H. as his hometown — started all 47 games he played in, and hit an impressive .388 (73-for-188) with 58 runs scored, 42 RBI, 10 doubles, 2 triples and a home run, while also going 22-for-23 on stolen base attempts.
Yeah, safe to say that Harring was back in a big way.
Georgetown native Jake Hiltz an All-Star
We have local talent spread out across the entire state.
Just recently, Georgetown native Jake Hiltz was named a Salem News All-Star in lacrosse, after the senior attack led his Pingree team to the New England Select Lacrosse League (NESLL) tournament crown. The quad-captain finished second on the team in both goals (40) and total points (56), and was chosen as both a NESLL First Team All-Star and New England Prep School Athletic Conference honorable mention. His biggest performance of the season was a 6-goal, 4-assist outburst in a victory over Portsmouth Abbey.
Hiltz will now play his college lacrosse at Division 1 Iona (NY) University.
