After days of anticipation, the MIAA released its official girls basketball playoff brackets on Saturday afternoon.
And in total, four of our local CAL teams made their respective fields.
Starting at the top, Newburyport (14-6) is ready for the tougher competition it will face being back up in Division 2, following two years down a level. Ava Bailey (10.9 ppg), Clara Thompson (10.8 ppg), Morgan Rouba (7.3 ppg, 28 3s), Christina Corneau (5.3 ppg, 20 3s) and the Clippers are the No. 22 seed in the tournament, and will travel down to No. 11 Duxbury for a first round game on Thursday night.
Meanwhile in Division 3, a pair of setbacks in the Spartans Classic tournament didn’t stop Pentucket (16-5) from still being the No. 8 seed. The Panthers are hopeful to get Daily News All-Star guard Allie Gagnon (7.7 ppg) back from injury, but have plenty of firepower to make a run regardless between Amelia Crowe (14.2 ppg, 42 3s), Devyn Walsh (9.0 ppg), Chloe Dancewicz (5.7 ppg) and Sofia Bellacqua (5.1 ppg). It’s currently a waiting game for the Panthers, though, who will get the winner of the preliminary round game between No. 40 Monomoy and No. 25 Seekonk.
Then in Division 4, young Amesbury (13-7) is back in the playoffs for the second straight year. Athletes like Olivia McKay (11.7 ppg, 20 3s), Delaney Sargent (9.1 ppg, 14 3s) and Ellison Talbot (4.8 ppg) earned postseason experience during last year’s run. But now, the freshmen backcourt of Maddy Rodrigues (11.1 ppg, 23 3s) and Haley Dube (8.3 ppg, 17 3s) will get their first crack at it for the Redhawks, who are the No. 15 seed and will play either No. 47 Immaculate Heart or No. 18 Uxbridge.
Finally, two huge late victories saw Georgetown (5-14) vault into the Division 4 field as the No. 29 seed. The Royals have been led most of the year by the 8th-grade duo of Victoria Barbarick (16.5 ppg, 35 3s) and Brylee Hodges (12.4 ppg, 24 3s), as well as newcomers Crismeylin Mateo (5.6 ppg) and Channel Vizcaino (5.3 ppg). But now with senior Katie Davies (6.2 ppg) back in the lineup from injury, the team is fully healthy. Plus, the Royals will host a familiar foe in CAL rival and No. 36 Ipswich in the preliminary round — Wednesday, 6 p.m. — who they beat way back on December 12th in their lone meeting of the year, 61-28.
Here are the playoff brackets for each division that includes a local team.
