BOYS HOCKEY
Rockport drops two: Competing in the BankGloucester holiday tournament at Talbot Rink, the Vikings fell to Groton-Dunstable, 6-1, on Monday, before dropping a 4-2 decision to Nashoba Valley Tech in the consolation round on Tuesday. Hayden Wood scored on a penalty shot for Rockport’s lone goal in the tourney opening loss. Against Nashoba, Matt Heath scored his fourth goal of the year on a feed from Matt Coughlin. Heath was named to the All-Tournament team. Ben Ranier had the other goal on assists from Ben Sperry and Sam Webber.
Other players named to the All-Tournament team included Bishop Fenwick’s John Tavarnese, Nashoba’s Sal Arena and Groton-Dunstable’s Owen Enos. Groton-Dunstable took home the title via a convincing 5-1 win over Fenwick in the championship tilt, with goalie Cam Columbus earning MVP honors.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Winthrop 4, Gloucester 0: Scoreless after one period, the Fishermen (2-4) were unable to keep pace with a strong Vikings squad down the stretch. GHS goalie Kaydin Cusumano was great in net in the loss, keeping her team in it with a number of saves throughout.
“We just couldn’t capitalize on some good chances against a solid goalie,” said GHS coach Rob Parsons.
Gloucester returns to the rink on Saturday to take on Beverly at 4 p.m. at Endicott’s Ray Bourque Arena.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Masconomet 46, Manchester Essex 41: In what was a back and forth battle throughout, the Hornets (2-2) took a 38-36 lead into the final frame but struggled to find the bottom of the net down the stretch in the narrow setback. Lily Oliver led the way with 17 points while Harper Brooks also reached double figures with 13. Anna Gardner added six points on two threes while Kacey O’Connell also knocked down a triple. Manchester will travel to Pentucket next on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 6:30 p.m.
Gloucester drops pair: The Fishermen (0-6) dropped both their games in the Winthrop Holiday Tournament, falling to the host Vikings by a 58-46 score on Monday before dropping another competitive 59-51 decision to Stoneham on Tuesday. Jordan Perdue-Deltorchio turned in a great couple of games on both sides of the court, earning recognition on the All-Tournament team for dropping 25 points against Winthrop and 29 against Stoneham. Chloe Kousoulos added 13 against Winthrop while Olivia Madruga had 10 against Stoneham and Natasha Proposki chipped in six. Gloucester is off until Monday, Jan. 5 when it travels to Salem (6 p.m.) in search of its first win.
INDOOR TRACK
Manchester Essex splits: The Hornets girls squad came up with a 61-39 win over Lynnfield on Tuesday while the boys team dropped a 60-40 decision. Almost everyone competing for Manchester Essex recorded PRs, including Charlie Thurlow in the high jump (4 inch PR) and shot put win; Cia Donahoe in the high jump; and Gus Hall. The latter was a triple winner, coming out on top on the mile, 1000 meter and 2-mile.
