Effingham County 4-H member Miley Pontious has been selected as one of just three winners nationwide in the Woody’s Mini Calf Giveaway, earning her the opportunity to receive and exhibit her own calf.
The contest drew entries from youth across the United States, with applicants required to submit a one-page essay outlining their livestock experience, goals and interest in showing. Pontious was the only winner from Illinois, with the other two recipients representing Maryland and Nebraska.
Pontious is already active in livestock showing and continues to build strong skills in the show ring. This opportunity will allow her to expand her project work by adding a beef project, further developing her showmanship, responsibility and leadership skills through hands-on experience.
Through the program, Pontious will take full ownership of the calf and is responsible for its care, including feeding, housing and veterinary needs. In return, she will showcase the calf at livestock events and community educational opportunities.
“We are incredibly proud of Miley for being selected in such a competitive, nationwide contest,” said Patti Logan, University of Illinois Extension Program Coordinator for Effingham County. “Opportunities like this not only recognize the hard work our 4-H members put in, but also help them grow their skills, confidence and passion for agriculture. We look forward to seeing Miley continue to succeed with her new beef project.”
Effingham County 4-H leaders are excited to support Pontious as she begins this new project and continues her growth in agriculture and youth development.
