The following school closings are planned as Tropical Storm / Hurricane Helene nears landfall:
— Valdosta State University. VSU will be closed Thursday and Friday, according to the university’s website. Students and housing employees who live on campus can remain in their hall during the closure and storm. Students remaining on campus will have to shelter in place in their residence hall. Palms Dining will be open Thursday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. All other locations will be closed. Palms Dining is expected to reopen Friday. In the meantime, storm meal bags with non-perishable food can be picked up from Palms when it is open, and takeout meals can be obtained by meal plan holders as well. Students are encouraged to have water and “shelf-stable” food ready.
— Brooks County: All schools will let out at 11:30 a.m. Thursday and will be closed Friday.
— Lowndes County Schools: All Lowndes County schools and system offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday. All after-school activities, including the Lowndes – Colquitt football game, are postponed. Lowndes County schools expect to resume operations on Monday, September 30.
— Valdosta City Schools: All Valdosta City schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday. All after-school activities are canceled. Friday’s football game against Camden County will be announced on Friday. The VCS Nutrition Program is preparing bagged meals for students to take home. VCS will access damage to facilities after the storm and provide updates on reopening the school.

Valdosta: All city offices will be closed Thursday and Friday.
Valdosta-Lowndes Chamber of Commerce: Thursday’s Business After Hours event will be postponed.
