Newburyport senior Jack Oreal must have seen the sub-headline in our “local roundup” article last Friday.
“Pentucket golf on receiving end of 41-point outburst,” it read.
The blurb was highlighting North Reading golfer Brendan Nelson, who fired a 2-under round at Haverhill Country Club last week to card 41 quota points in a victory over the Panthers. It was one of the better rounds that the area has seen this decade, as Oreal himself has hit 40 points twice during his career (one in 2024 and the other in 2025), while former Triton great Cael Kohan also had a 40-point day during the 2020 season. But getting to 41 points like Nelson did, that hadn’t been seen in quite some time.
Well, in channeling his inner Michael Jordan, Oreal basically said, “And I took that personally.”
In a non-league mega-showdown on Wednesday afternoon, Oreal matched that greatness by traversing home Rowley Country Club with an incredible 41 points, leading Newburyport to a 186-168 victory over Masconomet. It was an epic showdown between Oreal and the Chieftians No. 1 golfer, Brendan O’Connor, who himself came home with 40 quota points. The Chieftians were undefeated a year ago and finished second at both the Division 2 North Sectional and the D2 State Meet, with O’Connor earning meet medalist honors at the Sectional.
But on Wedesday, Oreal was just one point better.
And it’s now the third career 40-point outburst round for the two-time Daily News MVP, who continues to make his case for a three-peat. The Clippers (6-0) then saw two other golfers post in the 30s, with Sam Luekens coming home with 34 points while Gavin Goich was right behind him with 31.
TRITON: Winning streak keeps on growing
Look out, because now the depth is starting to show.
Heading into the new season, Triton had four returning golfers who were all honored in some way on last year’s Daily News Golf All-Star team. You had both Evan Allen and Jack Gagne be named All-Stars, while Cullen Kohan and Wyatt Allen made our Honorable Mentions list.
But on Wednesday, only one of them finished as a top-3 team scorer.
That’s because the Vikings are proving to be just as deep as they are talented, and their fourth straight victory saw them head over to Merrimack Golf Course and beat host Methuen, 157-141. Gagne finished with 30 quota points, but out in front it was Noah Collins with a team-high 31 for the Vikings (6-1), while Charlie White carded 25.
PENTUCKET: Good day, but just short
When every point had been added up at Bradford Country Club following Wednesday’s round, it was still the third-highest scoring day of the season for Pentucket.
But as has happened a handful of times already this fall, it was just short.
It was still a good day for Pentucket overall, but visiting Wilmington was able to score well enough to drive home with a 146-126 victory. The Panthers (0-7), who will next play Rockport and Amesbury, were led by 27 quota points from Cam Lavalley and 26 from Brody LeColst.
GEORGETOWN: Skahan still steady in setback
The first win of the year was nearly on the board.
Georgetown welcomed in a non-league match against Winthrop on Wednesday afternoon, and almost got the job done before finishing on the wrong end of a 115-100 final. Despite the loss, senior captain Robbie Skahan continued his fine season for the Royals (0-7), and came back to the Black Swan clubhouse with 23 quota points.
Nate Anderton carded 20 points and Bryan Benoit added 17 for the Royals, who will next match up against Essex Tech and Triton.
