Madeleine MacNutt
Senior outfielder and captain
Beverly High
1. What does it mean to you to be a good teammate?: To me, being a good teammate means being reliable and supportive no matter what. It’s not just about how you play, but how you show up for others. I try to fill that role by staying positive, picking people up after mistakes, and always putting the team first.
2. What is your favorite condiment?: Funny enough, I’m actually a pretty picky eater, and condiments are one of the things that I highly dislike. I basically won’t have any condiments — unless you want to count butter as a condiment. In that case, butter would be my favorite.
3. What skill on the diamond do you feel like you’ve improved the most at?: I feel I’ve improved the most at my hitting overall. Compared to my freshman year my confidence has grown a lot, and my form has improved, too. Hitting is something I’ve put a lot of time into, so it was really rewarding to see that work pay off over the summer. I was especially excited going into my senior season after finally finding my rhythm at the plate.
4. As an outfielder, would you rather A.) Make a diving catch, B.) Gun down a runner attempting to take an extra base, or C.) Catch the final out in a no-hitter?: I’d choose gunning down a runner attempting to take an extra base. There’s something really satisfying about making a strong throw and stopping a play like that, and it really brings the energy up for the team!
5. Which artist or band are you dying to see in concert?: I’m dying to see Noah Kahan because he was my No. 1 artist this past year (and I listened to his music every day in October), but unfortunately, I couldn’t get tickets to his concert in Boston this summer. I’m hoping I can get some closer to the concert day, though!
6. Where are you going to college?: I’m going to the University of Rhode Island, where I will be studying textiles, fashion merchandising, and design. I chose this school because I loved the size of the school, its location near the water, the overall campus, as well as the major options. I hope to play club softball there to stay active.
7. What’s your go-to spot in Beverly for food?: It would probably be Chipotle because it’s quick and I always know I’ll like it. I usually get a steak quesadilla. I go there a lot with friends after school.
8. Is there any significance behind the uniform number that you wear?: My number doesn’t have a huge meaning, but I’ve worn No. 1 since my freshman year, and I’ve grown to really like it!
9. Finish this sentence: If I didn’t play softball, another spring sport I’d be really good at is … : Outdoor track, because I’m quick, have pretty good endurance, and I like pushing myself. I also think lacrosse would be a fun sport to try.
10. Lastly, tell us one life lesson you feel like you’ll take with you from your time playing softball for Beverly High: How to put the team before myself. Softball has taught me that everyone has a role, and doing what’s best for the team matters more than individual success. It’s about supporting each other, staying positive, and working toward a common goal.
