The Town of Lewiston has a new contractor to carry out long-delayed work on its Riverfront Park.
The town board awarded the work to Lewiston-based A-1 Landcare, which had previously completed the Lower River Road park’s first pavilion. They would carry out work that previous contractor Murdough Development Concrete & Masonry had failed to finish.
The bonding company involved with this project, Lexington National Insurance, handled finding a new contractor to finish the work. The town board approved a tender agreement with them, resolving any issues between the town and the bonding company regarding the original contract awarded.
That agreement states that of the remaining $592,507 contract balance yet to be awarded, with the original contract being worth $987,850, $443,312 would be paid to A-1 Landcare to complete the work. Another $141,040.88 would be paid to Ransomville-based Great Lakes Iron, which asserted a claim for labor and materials for the project, and the remaining $8,154.12 would remain with Lewiston.
“We’re very fortunate that the bid was right on line with what we originally (had),” said Town Supervisor Steve Broderick. “This is a perfect example where a performance bond worked, and we are very fortunate that A-1 got the bid.”
This past March, the town terminated a contract with Murdough Development Concrete & Masonry for failing to do their work. They were originally hired in May 2025 and were supposed to complete work by that December, but the only structure that showed signs of progress was a 24-foot by 36-foot pavilion, which had been deemed defective.
Other work that was supposed to be included was a 140-foot boardwalk with fishing access, a kayak launch, a fishing pier, and a handicapped accessible ramp.
The town had received $1.46 million from the Niagara River Greenway’s host community standing committee in March 20024 to fund these expansions. Broderick had previously said they still plan to have the park amenities open this year, though they do not have an opening date.
