TO THE EDITOR: Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, former chief of staff to the late Secretary of State Colin Powell, and Congressman Maxwell Frost of Florida, both agree with me that ICE’s insane quota of 1,200 daily arrests has forced them into ethnic cleansing, a mission creep into installment plan genocide.
This can only get worse, with the new billions allotted to ICE, and plans for 10,000 new troops and Steven Miller’s soon quota of 3,000 daily. Many of those detained will either end up in the El Salvador prison of no return, or in war-torn third nations where they don’t speak the language and have no family ties. How long would you or I last there?
Trump sprung this trap early on by firing 50 immigration judges and defunding legal aid for asylum seekers.
He just fired 15 more such judges. The backlog and wait at the border for legal U.S. entry becomes intolerable for those with hungry kids and worries that one of the drug cartels could catch up with them.
Desperate, they enter illegally, therefore becoming the “lawbreakers” that Trump’s told lies about for 10 years to scare and anger voters. Suitable for scapegoating and bounty hunting. Every American may soon have to choose becoming “little Hitler’s helpers,” happy our tax dollars fund this abomination, or ‘little Schindler’s helpers,” joining the resistance to wash the blood from our hands.
Should this seem like exaggeration, consider that SCOTUS just ruled that a U.S. birth certificate now doesn’t help if birth parents’ names appear Hispanic. Stopped for driving while brown, you can’t avoid arrest unless you have proof handy that one of your folks was a U.S. citizen. Goodbye, Constitution, at least for Latinos.
And now, naturalized citizens can be denaturalized if they dig up any old minor crime, DWI or omission in your paperwork. SCOTUS-denied due process before “Alligator Alcatraz” or deportation. Installment plan genocide for Spanish-heritage residents. Who’ll be next, you or I? First they came for the immigrants.
