Lions Club hosts Diabetes Awareness Day
Dear Editor
The Lions of Illinois Foundation has served people with Vision and Hearing Needs since 1974. Each year the non-profit Lions of Illinois Foundation holds a Diabetes Awareness Campaign from March 1 – May 31. The Danville Lions Club holds a Diabetes Awareness Day each year educating the public about diabetes, raising funds for the Illinois Foundation to help those with diabetes. Danville Lions Club Diabetes Awareness Campaign is 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 25 at the Tilton County Market. The Danville Lions distribute brochures explaining warning signs of, and suggestions for, healthy choices to reduce risks of Diabetes. Danville Lions Club greatly appreciates County Market’s support of this important Diabetes Awareness Campaign.
Since 1925, the Lions have taken the challenge given them by Helen Keller to become: “Knights of the Blind in the Crusade Against Blindness.”
According to the National Diabetes Prevention Program 29.1 million people have diabetes; 8 out of 10 adults have prediabetes. Diabetes is a disease with blood glucose levels above normal. With diabetes, a body doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use its own insulin well, building sugar up in the blood. Uncontrolled blood sugars cause many unhealthy conditions including vision loss and blindness. Type 1 Diabetes: the body does not make enough insulin. Type 2 Diabetes: the body doesn’t use its insulin well. Source: WebMD.com.
The Lions of Illinois Foundation Diabetes Awareness Campaign’s mission informs the public about Diabetes. 100% of the funds are used to provide visual and hearing health programs in Illinois. Lions Clubs in Illinois, including Danville Lions Club, utilize the vision and hearing screening equipment of the Foundation at no cost.
Please visit the County Market in Tilton on April 25 or support the Diabetes Awareness Campaign by sending a donation to Danville Lions Club, P.O. Box 1396, Danville, IL 61834. Thank you!
