CUMBERLAND — Area law enforcement agencies and prison personnel were at Allegany College of Maryland Friday celebrating Law Day.
The annual educational event provides students, professionals and community members with the opportunity to connect with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, legal professionals and criminal justice organizations, and highlights career opportunities in those fields. It’s hosted by the colleges Legal Studies and Criminal Justice programs.
“It is an annual event (that) brings together law enforcement and correctional agencies from the tri-state area to showcase their officers and specialized equipment,” Lt. Brett Lysinger, of the Allegany County Sheriff’s Department, said. The agency had its Special Operations Response Team vehicle on site.
Law Day, observed annually on May 1, was established in 1958 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The event also included participation and demonstrations from a wide range of agencies, including Western Correctional Institution, Federal Correctional Institution, North Branch Correctional Institution, Maryland State Police, Pennsylvania State Police, West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, Maryland Natural Resources Police, Cumberland City Police, Frostburg City Police, Montgomery County Police and Maryland State Police Aviation Command Trooper 5.
“It was a wonderful event bringing law enforcement, corrections students and the public together,” Lysinger said.
