ESSEX — An old farm with fields and forests as a backdrop provided the perfect location to enjoy a day filled with bright flowers and ribbons as well as entertainment and food to welcome springtime at the Lakeside School at Black Kettle Farm.
Denoting the feeling of the celebration is the following song performed daily at the school and for the audience: “Good morning dear Earth. Good morning dear Sun. Good morning dear stones and beasts on the run. Good morning dear flowers and birds in the trees. Good morning to you and good morning to me.”
The guests were treated to what can only be described as a sumptuous brunch featuring a variety of quiches, baked goods, pancakes and locally produced maple syrup, May 16.
Felix Haskins, a graduate of Lakeside, added to the pastoral ambience by playing his cello.
Those in attendance headed down a trail to a forest opening and were greeted by kindergarten teacher Gregg Van Deusen playing a merry tune on a recorder. In this idyllic location replete with a suspension bridge going over a babbling brook the kindergarteners narrated, “The Three Billy Goats Gruff,” while manipulating puppets featuring the fabled trio being confronted by the terrible troll.
The festivities culminated with a large maypole which could accommodate approximately two dozen revelers. The Lakeside students were the first to grasp the multi-hued ribbons as they twirled and sang several songs commensurate with the season. Then Lakeside graduates and any adults who wished to could partake in the gaiety.
Van Deusen reflected on the day’s events. “I absolutely loved this year’s May Day celebration. I always look forward to it, but this one felt especially joyful and full of life.
“The puppet show was a true highlight as the children brought it to life with so much heart. A few weren’t sure they even wanted to be in it until the very last minute, but because they had each practiced almost all the parts they were able to seamlessly step in. It was such a beautiful moment to witness them performing with confidence in front of such an appreciative audience.
“It was also heartwarming to see so many alumni return for this celebration. From three of our senior members who have just started college all the way to last year’s kindergarteners, it was a full-circle moment. We were especially lucky to have Lakeside third-grade graduate Felix Haskins join us on cello.
“May Day always feels like more than just a festival. It’s a celebration of community, of growth, and the joy of being together. While I love all our festivals, big and small, May Day feels most like a wedding; a true celebration of life and connection.”
