THOMASVILLE – In a dominating performance, the Thomasville Lady Bulldogs volleyball team defeated the Cook Lady Hornets in just two sets. This win helped Thomasville improve to 5-7 overall and 2-0 in region play.
The Lady Bulldogs defeated Cook in a dominating first set 25-7. They finished the Lady Hornets off in the second set with a decisive 25-15 victory.
“We’ve really been focusing on the serves and working together,” said Thomasville head volleyball coach Jackie King. “And that’s something we’ve continued to improve on and we’ve had less errors on our serving. That’s been huge for us.”
That focus on serves was clear and obvious as the Lady Bulldogs had several aces and Cook struggled to return serves all night.
Senior Harper Page was named Queen of the Court.
“She was ready to come in when necessary,” said King about Page. “She builds everyone up around her on and off the court and that positivity it really just helped support our team.”
The Lady Bulldogs had a rough start to the season as they began on a seven game losing streak. However, most of those losses were to higher classification opponents in preparation for 1A play. Since beginning 1A play, Thomasville has gone 5-0. That includes a 3-2 win over cross town rival and the Class 5A Thomas County Central Lady Jackets. In their last five contests, the Lady Bulldogs have lost just two sets. When asked about how it feels to have such a tough opening stretch pay off for her team, King said she believes it has instilled confidence in this Lady Bulldogs squad.
“I think it has given the girls so much confidence, because we stayed with all of those teams,” she said. “We were right there with them and worked really hard to stay with them. Now that we play more on our level it’s like we’ve got this, we can do this. I think starting out so hard, it was hard and it’s hard when you lose that many, but it paid off because we were used to that quality. Our focus each game was it doesn’t matter who we play against, we want to play to our highest ability.”
Thomasville will play their next five games on the road, including four region contests against Taylor County, Chattahoochee County, Quitman County and Baker County. They will then return to Thomasville to play host to region opponents Calhoun County and Brooks County on September 24.
