You can bet that this Newburyport girls lacrosse team is a focused bunch.
The Clippers reached the summit of the state two years ago winning the Division 3 State Championship, and nearly went back-to-back before falling to Medfield in last year’s title game. A very talented senior class did graduate out following last spring, but — of course being Newburyport — there’s still a lot of familiar faces hanging around.
And if the program wants to make it three straight title game appearances, it certainly got off to a nice start on Wednesday.
Reese Bromby, a UMass Amherst commit, poured in five goals, and the Clippers opened their season easily racing past North Reading, 16-7. Avery Tahnk was right behind with four goals, and both Amelia Price and Emily Chandler found the back of the net twice. Amanda Linteris, Sonia Tummala and Blaire Fox rounded out the scoring, and the trio of Erin Marshall, Callie Harris and Tummala each had three assists.
Newburyport now has over a week off before making the trip to Essex Tech on Thursday.
Newburyport boys squash Hornets
The Newburyport boys looked every bit the potential powerhouse during their season opener.
The Clippers welcomed in North Reading on Wednesday afternoon, and dominated their way to a 15-2 victory. Returning Daily News All-Star Colin Fuller led the way with six goals, and Eli Sirota (1a), Carter Scott and Jack Miller each had two. Davis Pons chipped in a goal with two assists, and Luke MacIsaac and Asher Kinsey added the final tallies.
Matt Page, a fellow returning Daily News All-Star, won 12-of-13 faceoffs, and senior goalie Brendan Grossman posted eight saves.
White scores twice, but Amesbury falls
The Amesbury boys couldn’t come out on top during their season opener on Wednesday, dropping one to a solid Ipswich squad, 17-5. Senior captain and UMass Boston commit Max White scored twice for the Redhawks, and the trio of Grady Hagan, Evan Murphy (1a) and Landon Mitchell had the other goals.
Another bright spot was sophomore goalie Chase Tuneburg, who made 11 saves in his first ever start.
Laky, Triton come up just short
It was almost a nice season-opening comeback.
With nine minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Triton boys trailed visiting St. Mary’s (Lynn) by three. The Vikings were able to cut into the deficit, but couldn’t find the tying goal before eventually falling to the Spartans, 9-7.
Junior attack Paxton Laky led Triton with four goals, Alex Pasquini found the back of the net, and Shawn Twomey had a goal with three assists. The Vikings will look to pick up their first win of the new season when they host Pentucket on Friday (4 p.m.).
