NORTH MANKATO — Police are warning the public of a frightening phone scam seeking ransom for a fake kidnapping.
North Mankato police responded at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a possible kidnapping.
A father had received a phone call while he was at work from a number that appeared to be his adult daughter’s. When the man answered, he heard an unfamiliar voice along with sounds of a woman in distress. A person then told him his daughter had been kidnapped. The caller demanded $1,000 to keep his daughter from being harmed.
The daughter was soon determined to be at her place of employment and not in danger.
Police said her phone number had been “spoofed.”
The incident is under investigation.
