JOHNSBURG — The Chazy boys’ basketball team is spending a good deal of time on the road this week.
The ninth-seeded Eagles recorded a 52-44 victory over eighth-seeded Johnsburg/Minerva on Wednesday night in the opening round of the Section VII Class D Tournament.
For their efforts, the Eagles head back on the road today for a 6 p.m. game at top-seeded Bolton at 6 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
Josh Juneau and Cooper Cross combined for 40 points in Chazy’s win over the hosts, with Juneau pouring in 23 and Cross 17.
The Eagles held a 28-23 halftime lead.
“Overall, it was a tight game from the first to the fourth quarter,” Chazy coach Austin Tetreault said. “We pressed the entire game and took a small lead into the half.
“But we turned the ball over three-straight times near the end of the third quarter and they scored six points to cut it to one. And they went up by three to start the fourth.
“Josh Juneau then hit a big three for us to calm things down, we continued to press and were also able to get some offensive rebounds. Late in the game, Connor Cross had a huge and-one to help us seal the win. They are a well-coached team. It was a great atmosphere for the game and their fans were really into it.”
Nick Sauer-Jones accounted for 12 points and Liam McKinney added 11 to pace Johnsburg/Minerva in scoring.

MORIAH — Teams continue to use the week before sectional play for final tune ups.
Moriah may want to forget this one as they fell 74-63 to Beekmantown.
The Eagles on the other hand look to be hitting all the right points at the right time. Five players reached double digits, led by Miguel Herrera’s 18 points.
Seth Beebe (10), Leo Williams (10), Steven Bronson (11) and Aleky Duprey (15) helped lead the charge for Beekmantown.
The Vikings were led by Cooper Allen’s 21 and Chase McGinness’s 20 points. Joe Pelkey added 14.
“We flat out got beat in every aspect of the game, whether it was turnovers, rebounding, defense, or effort,” Moriah head coach Don Tesar Jr. said. “Beekmantown just pushed us around to get whatever position they wanted to and they beat us up down low.
“We need to improve our defense and just all around effort.”
