CUMBERLAND — Investigators with the Cumberland Fire Department and the Office of the State Fire Marshal are seeking the public’s help in identifying a suspect who set a Greene Street tire shop on fire Saturday morning.
Investigators obtained video surveillance footage of the suspect, who ignited a flammable device on a window air conditioning unit at D&K Tires.
After a passerby discovered the fire around 4:42 a.m., the Cumberland Fire Department and surrounding departments responded to the two-bay auto repair store at 638 Greene St., and were able to contain the fire to an office area. Extensive smoke, soot and water damage throughout the business was estimated at $50,000.
Surveillance footage captured the suspect walking down Greene Street from the Dollar General area around 4:30 a.m. to the side of the tire store, the fire marshal’s office said. The suspect then stopped and ignited a flammable device on top of the air conditioning unit, slowly walking away toward Greene Street and out of view of the surveillance camera.
Investigators believe the suspect is a white male, approximately 5 feet, 8 inches tall, with a large build. In the video, the suspect appears to be wearing loose-fitting pants, possibly sweatpants and a flannel shirt. Investigators noted that the suspect had a hobbling gait, walking unevenly or with a limp.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Western Regional Office at 301-766-3888 or 301-729-5540.
The video of the suspect can viewed on the fire marshal’s office social media pages.
