Simon Brascoupe, artist and academic, is Anishinabe/Haudenosaunee and was raised on the Tuscarora Nation. Simon is one of the foremost Indigenous Artists in North America. His work explores themes of cultural identity, environmental stewardship, and the interplay of traditional and contemporary Indigenous life.
Simon’s work is highly regarded internationally and is exhibited in countless galleries and museums, including the National Gallery of Canada and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian.
Brascoupe is also a Niagara Wheatfield CSD graduate and an Inductee of Niagara Wheatfield Falcon’s Wall of Fame. He recently donated a priceless piece of art to the District entitled “Algonquin Moose II”. The sculpture also contains messenger birds called Wisakedjak in the Anishinaabe tradition. In Simon’s words, “The moose, a central figure in Algonquin stories and sustainability, serves as a reminder of the interdependence between humans, animals and the land.”
The precious, donated work can currently be found in the Wall of Fame case located in the Niagara Wheatfield Senior High’s front glass hallway. Niagara Wheatfield CSD Superintendent Daniel Ljiljanich says, “The district expresses its deepest gratitude to Mr. Brascoupe for this outstanding gift to our community.”
