Niagara County Sheriff’s and state investigators are investigating a death at the Niagara County Correctional Facility on Thursday afternoon.
According to a release from the sheriff’s office, EMS crews from Wrights Corners Fire Company and Niagara County Emergency Services responded to the jail about 3:15 p.m. Thursday for a report of an unresponsive inmate.
Upon discovery of the inmate, the release said, life-saving measures were immediately taken by corrections personnel and the jail medical staff at the facility; however, the individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A release on the incident referred to the death as an apparent suicide.
An investigation into the death is continuing in conjunction with the New York State Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation as required. The New York State Commission of Correction was also notified.
The name of the incarcerated individual was not released by the sheriff’s office.
