MANKATO — Disaster relief in the form of Individual Assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency could take months to reach county residents, and it’s contingent on a disaster declaration at the federal level.
FEMA representatives visited properties in the county July 11-13 to gather information on eligibility for IA and, according to Eric Weller, the Blue Earth County emergency management director, these preliminary assessments are still occurring.
Following the completion of these assessments, Gov. Tim Walz must file a request with FEMA showing that the disaster is of such severity that effective response is beyond the capabilities of state and local governments.
Based on the governor’s request, President Joe Biden may declare that a major disaster or emergency exists, which would activate IA efforts.
“It could take one or two months after that request until we hear back if it has been declared,” Weller said.
Specific amounts of IA are determined using a formula which takes into account existing damage and whether property owners had insurance. The IA received by residents may be in the form of direct payment or loans.
“There is very limited assistance available,” Weller said. “I urge people to have patience. Take pictures and keep receipts of expenses.”
