MANKATO — An inaugural Mankato event promises immersive history experiences based on the lives of ancient seafaring Scandinavians.
The Great Northern Viking Festival Oct. 19-20 will be outdoors at Jack McGowan’s Farm, 20002 Hawkeye Lane.
“The Great Northern Viking Festival is designed to transport attendees back in time through authentic reenactments, crafts, and a celebratory spirit,” organizer Inga Northern stated in a press release.
Family-friendly activities are slated between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on both days. Attendees may view reenactments of a Viking encampment and live combat and learn about the role birds of prey played in Viking history during a show featuring live raptors.
Vendors on the grounds will be selling Viking-themed crafts.
Bonfires are planned during a 21+ event — “A Night in Valhalla” — 6-10 p.m. Oct. 19. Live music, performances and storytelling are planned. Traditional Nordic beverages such as mead and ales will be available. Tickets start at $65.
Advance general admission tickets cost $15 for ages 18 and older and $10 for ages 8-17. Festival tickets are free for children age 7 and younger.
Organizers are seeking volunteers to assist with event setup and guest services duties throughout the festival.
