Swedish furniture brand IKEA is looking to open a proper Western New York location next year.
The Walden Galleria in Cheektowaga announced Monday that the chain’s second upstate New York location will open there in spring 2027. It will take up 67,000 square feet of lower-level space formerly occupied by Sears and Sears Auto.
It follows the location at the Destiny Mall in Syracuse, owned by the Galleria’s parent company Pyramid, which opened in November 2025 and is about the same size. Other New York state stores are in Brooklyn and in Hicksville on Long Island.
IKEA opened a pick-up point at 2525 Walden Ave. in Cheektowaga in January 2023, where customers can pick up select online orders. Another such location is in St. Catherine’s, Ontario, with the nearest full-size warehouse in Burlington, Ontario.
“This is an important development — not just for Walden Galleria, but for the entire region,” a release from CEP of Pyramid Management Group, Stephen Congel said. “Shoppers from across Western and Upstate New York, Southern Ontario, Canada, Pennsylvania, and beyond will soon have access to one of the most in-demand retail brands in the world.”
The release also states the Galleria was chosen because of its location near the I-90 and the center of the WNY region. Shoppers can expect the whole IKEA experience there, including its signature showroom, marketplace, and Swedish bistro.
The typical IKEA store is more than 300,000 square feet and carries more than 10,000 products for customers to carry home. Smaller format stores like the one planned for the Galleria have around 3,000 products.
The Swedish chain, known for its affordable home-assembly furniture, has 61 locations across the country in 27 different states and more than 500 worldwide.
