CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Frankfort’s Ryan Hughes won state titles in three Class AA distance events and Paw Paw’s Shayla and Donovan Tanouye also combined to win three state Class A titles on Friday and Saturday in the West Virginia state track and field championships at Laidley Field.
Hampshire’s Vinnie Greear won two state titles while East Hardy’s Madison Kerr, Frankfort’s Keiton Nestor and Keyser’s Tanner Detrick each brought home one.
Hughes, a senior, won the 800-meter run in 1:56.63, the 1600 in 4:30.75 and he capped it off with a personal best time in the 3200 in 9:18.33. He was also a member of the 4X800 relay team with Gavin McDonald, Johnny Jackson and Darius Gray that finished third.
McDonald finished fifth in the 3200 (9:41.80), seventh in the 1600 (4:29.86) and eighth in the 800 (2:03.13). All times were personal bests.
The Falcons finished runner-up with 66 points behind champion Point Pleasant’s 113. Keyser finished fourth with 47 points while Hampshire was fifth at 41.
Donovan Tanouye, also a senior, set a Class A state meet record by winning the 800 in a personal-best time of 1:55.53. He finished second in the 1600 with a season-best time of 4:26.56.
His sister, Shayla, while not breaking any state records, did win two titles for the Pirates. The junior won the 300-meter hurdles with a personal-best mark of 45.55 and took the long jump with a leap of 16 feet.
East Hardy’s Kerr won the girls 100-meter hurdles in 15.49 just ahead of Tanouye’s second-place finish of 15.70.
The Trojans’ Greear took the 200 in a personal best time of 21.91 and ran the second leg of the 4X200 winning team with Adrian Litchfield, Ben Riggleman and Trenton Timbrook in 1:30.47. Litchfield, Greear, Colten Fleming and Timbrook were second in the 4X100 relay and Mason Chenoweth, Litchfield, Riggleman and Greear were third in the 4X400 relay.
The Falcons’ Nestor was the 400-meter champion in 50.77 and he was the anchor on Frankfort’s second-place 4X400 team with Charlie Fairley, Dawson Arbogast and Eli Hesse and was the third runner on the 4X100 team with Hesse, Brady Twigg and Fairley.
Keyser’s Detrick won the pole vault with a school record 13 feet, 6 inches. Teammate and brother Alek Detrick finished third with a vault of 12’-6”.
Other area athletes also had outstanding performances.
If not for Hughes, Keyser sophomore Luca Altobello would be a two-time state champion in the 1600 and 3200 runs. He finished second in both with personal-best times of 4:24.40 in the 1600 and 9:29.28 in the 3200. He finished fifth in the 800 with another personal-best time of 2:01.27 and he was the first leg of Keyser’s fifth-place 4X800 team with Ashtin Thomas, Benjamin Mele and Austin Umstot.
In Class A boys, East Hardy’s Evan Hamilton took third in the 100-meter run (10.88). He was also the anchor leg on the third place 4X100 and 4X200 teams with Kristian Bauserman, Nehemiah Graham and Chase Rexrode.
Moorefield’s Caden Fertig finished sixth in both the 100 (11.39) and the 200 (23.73). He also anchored the fifth-place 4X100 and 4X200 relay teams with Jeshua Mazariego, Diego Taylor and Camden Laughlin on the 100 and Mazariego, Taylor and G. Javier Acosta on the 200.
Pendleton County’s Gabriel Harvey was fifth in the 400 (51.95) and eighth in the 200 (23.90).
The Wildcats’ Sawyer Apple set a personal best time in the 300-meter hurdles (40.96) to finish third and he was fifth in the 110 hurdles and the high jump.
Union’s Braylon Ward took sixth in the 300 hurdles with a personal best time of 41.68.
Doddridge County swept both team championships winning the boys title with 134 points and taking the girls with 104.
East Hardy was the highest area boys finisher with 21.5 points, followed by Paw Paw and Pendleton County tying for 12th, Moorefield 14th and Union 20th.
For the girls, Paw Paw’s 31 points was good for eighth. Moorefield finished 15th, East Hardy 18th, Petersburg 19th and Union 23rd.
Moorefield’s Parvatee Snyder was fourth in the 200 (26.76) and was the anchor leg for both the third-place 4X200 relay team with LaTanya Redman, LeeAnne Coon and Sydney Rumer and the fourth-place 4X100 group with Coon, Redman and Rumer.
Petersburg’s Joelle Boddy set a personal best time in the 100 hurdles won by Kerr by finishing in 17.26, good for fifth. She was the first leg on the Vikings’ sixth-place 4X102.5 shuttle hurdle team with Reece Sites, Ayden Mayfield and Bella Feaster.
Mayfield was sixth in the discus with a throw of 108’-01”.
Paw Paw’s Joselyn Smith was sixth in the shot put with a personal best heave of 31’-04”.
Union’s Chanelle Sutton was fifth in the 300 hurdles (50.34) and eighth in the 400 (1:04.57).
In Class AA boys, Keyser’s Davin Richardson took sixth in the 110 hurdles with a personal best time of 15.47 and he was the anchor for the sixth-place 4X110 shuttle hurdles with Alek and Tanner Detrick and Matthew Furey. Hampshire took fifth in the event with Peyton Milleson, Carter Pyles, Liam Nichols and Jackson Frazer.
Hampshire girls finished seventh overall and Keyser 15th. Williamstown took the AA title with 90.5 points.
The Trojans’ highest finish was third in the 4X400 relay with Giovanna Matthews, Rufina Haines, Madilyn See and Lynnea Clark. Keyser’s Mya Burgess, Conleigh Burton, Kerri Wittman and Ava Barrick finished seventh.
Hampshire was fourth in the 4X200 relay with Hisely Keiter, See, Clark and Kendyl Stewart. The Tornado’s Miley Portillo, Wittman, Hadley Courtney and Abby DelSignore were seventh.
The Trojans were also fourth in the 4X102.5 shuttle hurdles with the group of Lexi Whetzel, Keiter, Avory Steinmetz and Lani Stewart. Keyser’s foursome of Wittman, Evelyn Cole, Dalila Riggleman and Mya Greene came in fifth.
Burgess, Burton, Hayleigh Haggerty and Barrick finished eighth in the 4X800.
Individually, Hampshire’s Lani Stewart was fifth in the 100 hurdles (16.50), Keiter took fifth in the high jump (5’-0”), Bailey Nichols took sixth in both the 1600 (5:27.16) and the 3200 (11:50.58), setting personal bests in both, and Steinmetz was sixth in the long jump (15’-6.5”). Keiter was eighth (15’-2.75”) with both Steinmetz and Keiter setting personal marks.
The top eight finishers in each event earned all-state honors.
