The Houston Police Department’s Bike Relay Team ended wrapped up its 6-day, roughly 1,600-mile, charitable bike ride Saturday afternoon in downtown Niagara Falls.
The 45th anniversary ride, which raises money for Blood Cancer United, began on Monday, July 20, in Houston. It ended just after 4 p.m. Saturday when the group crossed the finish line at the Crowne Plaza hotel in the 7000 block of Buffalo Avenue.
The group completed the last mile of the ride with a police escort from the Niagara Falls Police Department and New York State Police.
The group of 27 Houston police officers split into four relay teams. For 24 hours a day, over the past six days, the teams rotated shifts and rode hundreds of miles each shift.
Throughout the ride, many officers wore dog tags in memory and honor of those who have been affected by cancer.
Organizers said that approximately $92,000 has already raised so far and that total continues to rise with donations still coming in.
