A house in the residential center of Oneonta was rendered uninhabitable after a fire broke out on the second floor and spread to the attic.
The Oneonta Fire Department was called at 11:47 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14 to 57 Maple St. — a two-story, four-apartment structure, according to Fire Chief Brian Knapp. The first floor resident and visitors were able to leave the house safely. The second floor apartments were under construction, and the other first floor apartment was unoccupied, Knapp said. All pets were accounted for at the scene.
The first floor apartment was occupied by one tenant, however the significant water damage from fire operations prevented the tenant from returning to the home.
Fire crews cleared the scene at 2:14 p.m., and the investigation was completed by 7 p.m. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, Knapp said.
Mutual aid was provided at the scene by Otego, West Oneonta and Franklin fire departments, Otsego County EMS and the Office of Emergency Services. On standby at the Oneonta fire station were Laurens, West Laurens and Mount Vision fire crews, along with Otego EMS, which responded to one call while Oneonta was still on scene.
