FLEISCHMANNS — Director, writer and comedian Josh Ruben will present his horror film “Werewolves Within” at Spillian, its filming location, Saturday evening, Feb. 24. Spillian, described as a historic Catskills mansion, is at 50 Fleischmanns Heights Road.
According to a media release, billed as “Winter Horrors: Werewolves Within with Josh Ruben and Friends,” the event provides an opportunity to embrace the true horrors of winter on an evening dedicated to scaring.
The evening will begin at 5 p.m. with a themed cocktail hour to include small bites. At 7 p.m. Ruben and Jean-Michel of Megabrain Comics will spend 30 minutes introducing the film from within the house where the horrors happened. A tour will follow and conversation on horror movie making and Ruben’s debut graphic novel, “Darla.” A question-and-answer session will begin around 8:45 p.m.
Those who attend the viewing in costume may be eligible for a reward.
Ruben, a native of Woodstock, is best known for his feature films “Scare Me,” which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, and “Werewolves Within” which premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival. In 2021, “Werewolves” won a mid-season Hollywood Critics Association Award for “Best Indie.” Both films were filmed in the Hudson Valley.
“Werewolves Within” landed in more than 30 “Best of” features, including many “Top Films of the Year” and “Top Horror Movies of the Year” lists in 2021, alongside major studio horror releases such as “A Quiet Place 2” and the Palm d’Or winning “Titane.” Entertainment Weekly highlighted the “fabulous, hilarious performances of its deep-bench cast,” and Forbes gave the film its No. 1 pick for Best Horror, adding “it’s hands down one of the most fun films of the year.” Recently, Vulture listed “Werewolves Within” as the No. 1 Best Rated Video Game Movie out of a list of 50 films.
In addition to producing, directing, and writing, Ruben is also a performer best known for his performances in Travis Stevens’ horror film, “A Wounded Fawn” and the improvised comedy series “Make Some Noise” on Dropout TV. His debut graphic novel, “Darla,” a twisted tale inspired by the world of Stephen King and “Tales from the Crypt” is available where comic books are sold.
