A little over a month ago, Aleks Dimov was barely seeing any playing time.
But now, he’s a full-blown starter for Georgetown who routinely drops double-doubles.
Dimov had the best game of his young career on Wednesday night, and at the perfect time, too. The junior forward poured in 21 points with 11 rebounds, leading Georgetown to a revenge win over arch-rival Manchester Essex, 56-38. The Hornets won the first meeting between the two earlier in the season and even entered the game one spot above the Royals in the Division 4 rankings (No. 8-No. 9).
But when the latest MIAA poll comes out on Friday morning, expect to see the Royals (11-5) — now winners of four straight — in line to host two playoff games. Irvin Zapata hit three 3s and added 11 points for the winners, and junior point guard Brendan Loewen hit a triple and chipped in 9 points.
NEWBURYPORT: Girls win 7th in a row
This Newburyport girls basketball team has definitely found something.
Following Wednesday night’s 52-34 victory down at Bedford, the Clippers have now won seven in a row with the Division 3 state tournament fast approaching. An impressive six of those seven wins have been by at least 16 points or more. The Clippers (12-4) were up to No. 16 in the latest Div. 3 power poll and will most likely jump up again when the latest ranking gets released on Friday morning.
Sophomore Clara Thompson once again had a standout game, leading the way with 21 points. Olivia Foley wasn’t too far behind with 16 points, and fellow senior captain Laney Schwab chipped in 6 points.
TRITON: Boys down to their final chance
If this was a match-play golf round, the Triton boys are down two with two holes to play.
The room for error is officially gone.
Triton was doubled-up by a talented Lynnfield squad on Wednesday night that is one of the better defensive teams in the league, falling 64-32. James Tanona hit a 3 and finished with a team-high 11 points, while Harrison Huynh connected on two triples and added 9 points.
The Vikings (8-10) aren’t making the Division 3 tournament based on their ranking, so they need to get in via the .500 rule. The good news, however, is that the team’s final two games — now absolutely must-wins — are entirely winnable. The Vikings will travel to Northeast Metro (No. 68 in D4) on Friday night, before ending their regular season with a road trip to Pentucket (No. 63 in D3) on Monday.
Meanwhile, the Triton girls also had a tough night against Lynnfield, taking a 36-21 setback. Lily D’Andrea had 6 points for the Vikings, while the trio of Mia Dupuis, Summer Pawlick and Bella Burrell each had 4 points.
