The last four games for Newburyport senior Cal Atherton.
A 62-52 win over Woburn: 26 points and 13 rebounds.
A 63-53 win over Hamilton-Wenham: 14 points.
An 82-71 win over Ipswich: 35 points on four 3s.
Then most recently on Monday night in a 77-69 road win over a Division 1 opponent in Reading: 38 points on five 3s while going a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line.
Just pure dominance.
Monday’s most recent explosion came with plenty of college scouts in the building, and the two-time Daily News All-Star put on a show with 27 first-half points on his way to a near 40-bomb. Atherton now sits at 882 career points, and more importantly, his excellent play has helped Newburyport (8-0) stay undefeated and climb to the No. 9-ranked team in Division 2 with the latest release of the MIAA power poll.
Backcourt-mate Zayd Leanna also had another big game with 19 points, and senior forward Ben Cormier was right behind him with 13 points. The Clippers went 12-for-13 from the charity stripe during the victory, and will next host “Border Battle” rival Triton on Thursday evening.
Amesbury girls win seventh in a row
Everyone got into the game, and everyone contributed.
That was the story for the Amesbury girls during Monday’s latest victory, a solid 58-41 road triumph down at Weston. The Redhawks (9-1) have now won seven in a row, and saw themselves bump up to No. 9 in the latest MIAA Division 4 rankings that were released on Tuesday morning.
“A nice team win,” said Amesbury coach Scott Brown. “Everyone played a good amount, and we were able to beat a scrappy Division 3 Weston team.”
Out in front for Amesbury was sophomore Olivia McKay, who led all scorers with 19 points. The freshmen duo of Maddy Rodrigues and Haley Dube scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, sophomore Delaney Sargent hit a 3 and had another strong game with 11 points, and both Celia Tavares and Ellison Talbot were praised for their defense.
The Redhawks will next close out their four-game road trip on Wednesday night when they make the drive over to Beverly.
