Whether it’s pretty are hard-working, a goal is still a goal.
On Saturday afternoon, Will Palermino put the work in, and got rewarded. The senior was forechecking along the boards while the overtime seconds were ticking away, but came away with the steal. He then skated out front, and roofed a shot to the short-side to life Newburyport to a dramatic win over Lynnfield in OT, 3-2.
And with it, the Clippers (11-3-1) are now winners of five straight.
It was actually Palermino’s second goal of the game, as he found the back of the net on a power play midway through the second period. Newburyport took a 1-0 lead in the first off a high shot from Tristan Joyce that trickled over the goalie’s shoulder, and Palermino’s first tally came just 45 seconds after Lynnfield had tied it up at 1-1. The Pioneers would again find an equalizing goal in the third to send the game to extra time, but the Clippers would send their fans at the Graf home happy.
Henry Waddell and Jackson DeVivo had assists, as did winning goalie Damien Lamb. Newburyport, ranked No. 5 in the latest Division 2 poll, will travel to play B.C. High on Tuesday.
ROUGH SECOND PERIOD DOOMS TRITON
For 67% of the game, Triton was able to keep its opponent off the scoreboard.
But for one period, turnovers doomed the Vikings in what ultimately ended up being a 3-2 loss to Essex Tech. The Vikings did get a tally from Luke Sullivan during the second period, but over that 15-minute stretch would surrender all three goals that would prove too much to overcome. Michael Taylor cut it to a one-goal game during the third, but the Vikings couldn’t find the tying goal.
Taylor, Vinny Magee, Alex Pasquini and Connor Rumph all had assists for Triton (8-8-0), which is on a bit of a skid and will try to turn it around against Bishop Fenwick on Wednesday.
NEWBURYPORT GIRLS FALL TO WINTHROP
It proved too much of an early deficit to dig out of.
Saturday afternoon, the Newburyport girls spotted visiting Winthrop three goals during the first period, and couldn’t make up the ground in an eventual 4-1 loss. Captain Olivia Wilson scored the team’s lone goal in the third to cut it to a one-goal game, but the visitors had an answer shortly after.
The Clippers (3-10-0) will now travel to play Shawsheen on Wednesday.
