So far, it’s been two games and two wins to start the season for the Newburyport boys hockey team. The Clippers stayed undefeated on the young campaign Wednesday night, finiding a pair of third-period goals to blank Bishop Fenwick at the Graf, 2-0.
And in a positive sign for the team, it was a couple of young guys making plays.
Senior forward Jackson DeVivo isn’t a young guy, but he buried a power play goal early in the third period to open the scoring off assists from freshmen newcomers Graham Luskin and Henry Waddell. Then moments later, fellow senior forward Tristan Joyce won a clean faceoff in the offensive zone, and the assistant captain wrapped around the net and stuffed the puck home to give his team a two-goal cushion.
Which was plenty for goalie Damien Lamb.
The junior netminder made 18 stops to record his first career shutout, which for him came against a quality opponent. Up next, the Clippers will take on Triton on Saturday at 6:30 p.m., in what will be a fairly early meeting in the season between the two archrivals.
AMESBURY COMES UP SHORT IN OPENER
The Amesbury boys hockey team went outside of the Cape Ann League to open its season, but couldn’t come away with a win. Playing a strong Methuen squad out of the Merrimack Valley Conference on Wednesday night, the Redhawks found the back of the net a couple of times, but were on the wrong end of a 5-2 setback.
Ben Richard and Wes Ackerman scored the goals for Amesbury (0-1-0), and Thomas McElaney also added a helper. In net it was Vincenzo Foster making his first career start, and the sophomore made 26 saves.
SZYMANSKI SCORES TWICE, BUT TRITON FALLS
A senior newcomer made a mighty impact for the Triton boys hockey team during Wednesday’s game at Winthrop.
Aiden Szymanski was all over the ice in just his second career varsity game with the program, finding the back of the net twice while assisting on another tally. But, with the game tied after the second period, the Vikings of Byfield surrendered a pair of goals over the final 15 minutes to fall to the Vikings of Winthrop, 5-3.
Michael Taylor had a goal and an assist for Triton (1-1-0), and both Kyle Regnier and Mason Colby had helpers.
NEWBURYPORT GIRLS BLANKED BY BEVERLY
The first win will come soon here for the Newburyport co-op girls hockey team, but it will have to wait until at least the weekend. On Wednesday night, the Clippers fell to a strong team from Beverly, 8-0, with goalie Cody Saboliauskas still playing a solid game in net.
Newburyport (0-3-0) will be at Winthrop on Saturday for a 1 p.m. puck drop.
